Steve’s Match Report
A fairly patched-up blues came unstuck against a well-drilled Eden side, to pile
on the misery stand-in stand-off Rob Brownlee damaged both his knee and his ankle
in the first ten minutes leaving Furness staring at a subs bench which contained
only forwards. Not surprising that Eden made the most of the disruption to the Furness
ranks and waded in for 6 first half tries and a half time unassailable lead of 36
points.
Furness tried hard in the first half to settle down and retain possession but
could only clear their lines temporarily coming up against a strong home team and
into the teeth of a cold northerly wind. The second period could have been a complete
disaster however Furness showed their courage and charged the home defence from the
re-start. First it was Corne Els supported by Mike Curran and Ivan Allonby who battered
the black and wide wall. Jack Clements eventually found enough space to beat his
opposite centre and started a move that was supported well by Scott Hadwin. The ball
came out to Marc Ashton and the excellent scrum-half kept the momentum feeding Piers
Cleaver and Will Mallinson to take up the challenge. With just about his only pass
of the day young winger Alex Brown made the most of it to nip past his opposite number
and zip down the wing to put Furness within 10 metres of the home line. This was
much better from the blues and the large travelling support showed their appreciation
by urging them on with the biggest cheer greeting their first penalty of them match
half way through the second half.
Eden steadied themselves and counter attack after a Furness mistake and out paced
the blue cover for a try adding a catch and drive from a line out for a similar result.
If they thought that Furness heads would drop they were mistaken as the blues upped
the anti and drove at the Eden line. Simon Luscombe went close, Els again the Ethan
Davies had a go but none could find the extra yard.
With blue shirts piling forward it left three-quarters of the pitch unguarded
and Eden managed to turnover possession to scamper in the corner on the counter-attack
for the closing try of the game. Furness will want to forget the first 40 minutes
but there were positive signs in the second forty and can feel a little aggrieved
that they did not trouble the scorer. A gutsy effort by all who donned the blue shirt,
more of it is needed this coming Saturday as Egremont are the visitors to the Strawberry
Grounds.
